Dry eye syndrome is an eye condition that can greatly affect your quality of life. Left untreated, it can cause discomfort, pain and even damage the cornea. Corneal scarring can lead to vision loss.
One treatment option for dry eye is InMode, a machine that uses optical technology called fractional bipolar radiofrequency (RF) to improve moisture in the eye. At Kamloops Family Vision Clinic in Kamloops, we now proudly offer InMode as a dry eye treatment. Book a consultation with us to get started.
What is Dry Eye Syndrome?
Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) happens when the eyes don’t produce enough tears or produce low-quality tears.
This results in the eyes not having enough moisture, which irritates the eyes. Symptoms include dryness, itchiness, grittiness in the eyes, redness, light sensitivity and blurred vision.
The most common cause of dry eye is meibomian gland dysfunction.
Dry Eye and Meibomian Gland Dysfunction
In people with meibomian gland dysfunction, the tiny eyelid glands that secrete nourishing oils into the tear film become clogged. Blockages can be caused by eye makeup, debris, mite infestations, and inflammation of the eyelid. This reduces the quality of tears, leading to rapid tear evaporation and dry eye syndrome.
When the meibomian glands are blocked, an individual may also experience a burning sensation in the eyes, styes, crusty discharge, and blurred vision.
How Inmode Forma Radiofrequency Treats Dry Eye
Inmode Forma Radiofrequency stimulates the meibomian glands to improve the production of tears. It’s a non-invasive and FDA-approved procedure that takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.
During the treatment, the Inmode machine is applied to the areas around the eyes while the patient sits comfortably. The heat created by the machine stimulates the meibomian glands, which leads to the softening of oils that have clogged up the glands. This also encourages the secretion of new oils and improves meibomian gland health.
The treatment is painless (you’ll likely only feel a tingling sensation or slight warmth) and has no downtime, meaning you’ll be able to get back to your usual routine as soon as the treatment ends. Generally speaking, 4-8 sessions are needed, depending on the extent of an individual’s dry eye symptoms. Many patients report noticeable changes after the first or second session.
An added benefit is that Inmode is appropriate for people of all ages and can be an alternative treatment for dry eye sufferers who've unsuccessfully tried other treatments and have not found relief.
